Jack Dean

Hi, I'm Jack! I'm a bold, colourful, chaotic designer who specialises in illustration, printmaking, branding, and motion. I make sure all my projects are injected with an enticing colour scheme, playful typography, and maximalist composition. I'm a creative and unique designer who loves to use my fine art background in my process and use traditional methods of type design and printmaking throughout my work.
THIS IS THE PLACE I did a catwalk dressed as Mother Nature on acid.
My personal response to the 36 Days of Type project, set by Treintayseis Studio. My concept was inspired by a common activity graphic design education will do, where u make a letterform with your body and photograph it. I then decided to emphasise the characters to create funny stories in each piece of type. This project was successful on social media and really helped me develop a personal style in design.
My mini zine project FRAGMENTS looked into the a group theme of dreams. My edition was about stress dreams and why we have them. I created a zine that works as both an A5 booklet and an A2 poster once unfolded. The pages have a chaotic overlapping aspect with playful typography mashed together to really embody the stressed issue.
A fun, colourful pattern created for a kids plant kit brand. I used the toolkit to create a risograph print, with lots of overlayed colour and texture. I then took that print and showcased it at this years print auction.
This is my illustration for the Aah Mag Freshers Issue cover. The work was inspired by a personal project into rainbow capitalism. The characters are all proud people, drag queens, and allies at the Manchester Pride parade 2023. I made the work in order to highlight the beautiful crowds of people at the heart of queer pride, not the corporations and rainbow capitalism predominantly seen at parades these days.
A favourite page from my book which aimed to reinterpret the themes and story of Giovannis Room by James Baldwin. The book is very held back in its description of homosexuality as the 1960 audience was rather shocked at the topic. My idea was to flip that and highlight this theme of shame and guilt about queer romance and showcase the love between the two characters that is only hinted at in the book.

This personal piece started in my first year on the course. I did a workshop led by Johnny Hardstaff and was inspired by his advice he gave me: If everyones piece was hung on a wall, what sets you apart? and I really tried to express my illustration as outlandish, queer, and bold as I could. This final piece 'SEE YOURSELF' is a further developed outcome after his workshop.
